Hymn Choir

Purpose

The FMBC Hymn Choir is a group of men and women who enjoy singing old and new Negro spirituals and metered hymns. We believe that Hymns breathe the praise of the saints, the vision of the prophets, the prayers of the penitent and spirit of the martyrs. Hymns bring solace to the sad, assurance to the perplexed, faith to the doubter and comfort to the oppressed. They span the centuries of history and bridge the barriers of denominations.

Weekly rehearsals are Thursdays, 6:30 p.m., Orchestra Room.

Objectives

. Continue to learn and expose congregation to spirituals and metered hymn singing

. Establish an annual hymn choir celebration program and invite area hymn choirs to participate in program

. Work with area hymn choirs and hold semi-annual workshops to learn metered hymns in order to transfer knowledge and to keep this tradition alive

. Continue fellowshipping with local hymn choir through hymn choir anniversaries, revivals, etc.

. Create an environment where other persons will want to join choir and become members and/or want to know more about this style of singing

Long Range Objective

. Make a recording in conjunction with semi-annual workshop as a method to archive hymn choir singing
