2020 Recap: Building & Strengthening Charlotte-Mecklenburg Voices to VoteThe Social Justice Ministry (SJM) at Friendship proudly presented a smorgasbord of activities to engage membership and community to promote the 2020 Census and voter registration, education, and mobilization. Our original strategy was re-tweaked to accommodate the mandates around COVID-19 in delivery of our messaging and activities. Thanks be to God; we were able to accomplish much with little!
SJM marched in the Charlotte Annual MLK, Jr. Parade promoting voter registration to crowds in downtown Charlotte.
SJM phone banked 5k+ calls between January and October to engage and encourage the necessity of completing the 2020 Census and to ensure their voter registration was current.
SJM hosted two demonstrations of the new voting machines at Friendship in a collaborative effort with the Mecklenburg Board of Election to prepare the county’s citizenry for the new look and changes.
Hosted two (in person) political forums at Friendship to introduce candidates running on the March Primary ballot.
SJM finished the month with a neighborhood canvassing (knocking on doors) in Precinct#16. We urged neighbors to complete the 2020 Census and to ensure their voter registration and their personal plan to vote were current.
Partnered with Seniors in the Spotlight Ministry to call members over the age of 80 years young to check-in on how they were doing and to inquire of any needs they had.
Orchestrated and produced (18) PSAs on the importance of completing the 2020 Census and the 2020 Vote on Friendship’s social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter.
Initiated voter registration in the parking lot at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. Also, completed an outdoor voter registration at Beatties Ford Road and Catherine Simmons during a Black Lives Matter rally for a neighborhood mural.
Produced and presented the virtual forum: The 2020 Census and the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan.
Presented and produced the virtual forum: Environmental Justice in Char-Meck and the 2020 Ballot.
Presented and produced the virtual forum: Black Votes Matter-The Ballot and Your Vote.
Conducted voter registration at Shads Landing Senior Living facility and their residents.
SJM partnered with the organization, When We Vote, an initiative conceived by First Lady Michelle Obama. “Fuel the Vote” at the Charles L. Sifford Golf Course on Remount Road. SJM encouraged voters to vote early and dispersed food boxes during the voter registration drive through.
Partnership host to two virtual political forums with the AKAs and other community activists.
Partnered with Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Victim Assistance in developing and designing Christmas cards for 117 families who lost loved ones to homicide.
